We've commented before how different our perspectives are with first impressions on anything like a restaurant, art, commercial products, etc.  Bryant's quick to criticize and compare for an objective or realistic viewpoint, while I focus on what good I can find.  I came across a Dear Abby post that where the G.B. Stern quote really struck me.

A THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The object of life is not to be "happy." The object of life is to make society a better place in which to live. Every one of us has something to offer. In the words of G.B. Stern: "Both optimists and pessimists contribute to our society. The optimist invents the airplane and the pessimist the parachute."
